Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the charge nurse assists with the care of psychiatric patients while patient is hospitalized as an Inpatient on the Behavioral Health Unit, as an Inpatient on other units, or in the Emergency Services Department.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education

High school diploma

Required Minimum Experience

At least one year of recent mental health tech experience or related experience in a hospital or healthcare environment providing patient care services.

CPI, Healthy Interventions or related training in the management of aggressive behavior.

Required Minimum Certification

BLS required

Required Minimum Skills

Working knowledge of mental health technician practices:

-close observation guidelines

-maintaining safe room utilizing guidelines

-de-escalation of agitated behavior

-management of aggressive behavior

Ability to assist patients with activities of daily living

Ability to participate in process improvement projects and patient data collection

Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse issues across the age spectrum

Ability to conduct educational/recreational groups with patients with psychiatric or substance abuse issues

Ability to demonstrate empathy and utilize active listening with patients and family

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, patients,

families, physicians and other internal customers

Knowledge of and the ability to utilize therapeutic verbal and written communication

Ability to maintain accurate and legible nursing charts and records
