Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Coding Assurance Director within Compliance, this position is responsible for performing audits of medical records and claims in accordance with the annual Compliance Work Plan and providing education to physicians and clinicians in a variety of settings. The Educator prepares written and oral communication to the Director on the results of audit performed, creates educational materials using PowerPoint, Visio, or similar software. This position requires knowledge of applicable regulations for Medicaid and Medicare, as well as the principles of physician documentation, coding, and billing in a variety of settings. Also required is advanced knowledge of CPT, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS coding systems, and must be prepared to become certified for ICD-10-CM. Responsibilities also include providing ICD-10-CM and EMR documentation training to physicians. This position also maintains contact with the coding, billing, and follow-up staff.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education: Minimum associates degree from an accredited college required or in lieu of associates degree candidate must meet the minimum experience.

Required Minimum Experience : At least five (5) or more years auditing or coding compliance experience in a physician practice required; or (7) years coding or billing experience in a physician or outpatient coding environment.

Required Minimum Certification: At least one of the following coding certifications that must be current and in good standing is required –

• Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from the American Academy of Professional Coders,

• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)

• Certified Coding Specialist – Physician (CCS-P) from the American Health Information Management Association

• Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA)

• Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor (CEMA)

Required Minimum Skills: Proficient in public speaking, presentations, and educational activities Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, CPT and ICD-9-CM and HCPCS coding, Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance procedures Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with co-workers as well as physicians. Demonstrated ability to explain complicated coding and compliance concepts. Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid policies required.

Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while working with physicians. High degree of accuracy and attention to detail Ability to work well under little guidance, Objective and detailed approach to problem solving

Good investigative and organizational skills Extensive experience and knowledge of inpatient and outpatient coding, billing and documentation requirements in academic medical centers

Advanced knowledge of medical records procedures and of federal and state laws governing medical records privacy and release of information Skill in exercising initiative, judgment, and decision-making to achieve
